Apple sells 1 Million iPhones, 10 million apps in opening weekend

Apple have just posted 2 press releases, announcing the opening weekend success of the iPhone 3G and the App Store. The iPhone 3G launch has certainly had it’s issues, with many carriers around the world suffering from activation issues.

The App Store also hasn’t escaped controversy with some developers sneaking up the A-Z order using spaces or non-alphabetic characters to be displayed at the top.

Overall Apple are claiming some very impressive sales numbers.

Apple Sells One Million iPhone 3Gs in First Weekend

In many places around Australia and no doubt around the world, the iPhone 3G was in very short supply and sold out, so had Apple got stock levels correct this number may have actually been closer to 2 or 3 million. Launching in many, many more countries is certainly the key here, however one noteworthy statistic is that the original iPhone took 74 days on the market to achieve the 1 million sales milestone.

iPhone App Store Downloads Top 10 Million in First Weekend

After now having 5 home screens full of apps and spending around AU$50 in the App Store, it doesn’t surprise me that many others have also embraced the new Application available for the iPhone. Whilst the out of the box functionality of the iPhone is superior to many others on the market, the extensibility offered by 3rd party application through the App Store is incredibly inviting.

There’s also an element of customisation, given that every iPhone owner’s hardware is essentially the same, the uniqueness come from the users customisation and application selection. I’m sure the 10 Million applications downloaded to date will only continue to explode while more applications are added daily, and more iPhones are sold.
