Aussies start from pole position in GT Academy final at Silverstone tonight

Team Australia of the Nissan GT Academy competition will start from pole position for the all-important final race tonight! In the Nissan 370Z NISMO race cars, our guys will compete against the best gamers turned drivers around the famous Silverstone circuit.

The Aussies won pole after taking victory in the Nissan Micra stock car relay race, thanks to a slick pit strategy call from Australian judge/mentor Rick Kelly.

“It was the first opportunity for us to go up against the other countries, and it was really nerve-wracking standing up on the pit wall – I can understand what my team go through when I’m out on the track! The boys did an outstanding job, we took advantage of the early safety car while the others stayed out and from that point on we were in a really good position.

We put Matthew (Simmons) in with more than three quarters of the race to go and he handled it really well and managed his times consistently, getting us to the flag in first place. Last year we were the strongest team in a number of disciplines but being at the back of the grid for the final race cost us – this time we’re at the front so let’s see what happens.”

Two contestants remain per country and unfortunately Nick Dalton was eliminated last night. For the race, Australia will be represented by Matt Simmons and Elliott Schutte. They are competing against USA, Mexico, Turkey and North Africa. All I can say is go kick ass guys, make the Australian motorsport and gaming  industries proud.

To watch the race, complete with live commentary and timing, check out the stream on NISMO.tv. Live coverage just started at 11:15pm AEST tonight, covering practice and the main race (starting at Midnight AEST).

While you’re waiting, get up to speed with how our boys reached the front of the grid.
