Android 6.0 Marshmallow is officially shipping on the new Nexus 5X, the first phone to ship with the latest release. The Nexus 5X is latest smartphone collaboration from Google and LG Electronics, and today is released to the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, India, Korea and Japan. You’ll notice Australia is missing from the list, so you’ll have to try your luck at the Google Store (https://store.google.com) but given it’s popularity, you’ll have to join the wait list.

Google says additional markets including Europe, Asia and Latin America will roll out the Nexus 5X in the weeks to come.

It’s one thing for developers to upgrade their phones to Android 6.0, but the majority of people will get Marshmallow on a new device in the next 12 months. Such is the difficulties with Android upgrades getting through carriers and 3rd party manufacturer customisations.

The device itself is a decent offering, the Nexus 5X offers a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, fingerprint sensor and USB type-C connector. As the first smartphone to market to feature Google’s newest OS, the Nexus 5X will be the benchmark device by which all other smartphones will be measured.

Juno Cho, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications said “Nexus devices are about having the newest, purest Android experience possible in an advanced package that doesn’t break the bank”.

Let’s hope we get the Nexus 5X to Australia sooner, rather than later.
