Hulu invite arrives, little point if your Australian

I was incredibly excited to the much sought after Hulu invite landed in my inbox. I quickly registered and got straight into playing some content.

Unfortunately I was repeatedly met with this message, “Unfortunately this video is not currently available in your country or region. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Upon reading the FAQ’s it explains Hulu is dissapoingly U.S. only atm.

Q: Why can’t I watch your videos from outside the U.S.?

For now, Hulu is a U.S. service only. That said, our intention is to make Hulu’s growing content lineup available worldwide. This requires clearing the rights for each show or film in each specific geography and will take time. We’re encouraged by how many content providers have already been working along these lines so that their programs can be available over the Internet to a much larger, global audience. The Hulu team is committed to making great programming available across the globe.

So after being met with that disappointment, my only option was to check out what I could. I was pleasantly surprised to see the shear number of hit shows being offered from Hulu.

    We’re talking huge hits like

    • Heroes
    • The Office
    • House
    • The Simpsons
    • Prison Break
    • 24
    • Battlestar Galactica
    • Las Vegas

    and many more.

Also another big draw card for hulu is they take advantage of Adobe’s recent update to Flash Player 9 and use h.264 to deliver 1280×720 HD video at 2,400 kbps. All the typical options for online video are there, full screen, embed, rate etc. The interface is clean and surprisingly, no advertising is present (this may be embedded in the video).

HD video online is now a reality, it’s an exciting time to be connected.

So without actually playing a single video, hulu certainly looks promising. It’s times like this that being a non-US resident really sucks. Please hulu work on bringing this service to Aus as soon as possible.
