iPhone firmware update (2.0.1) arrives, overdue.

We’re just 3 days shy of 4 weeks since the iPhone 3G launch and finally today Apple have released an updated firmware. Why’s this so important and long overdue ? Well quite simply the reliability of the iPhone has been very poor, with constant application crashes, Safari restarts, at times entire phone reboots and even complete lockups requiring a connection to iTunes this has been a serious problem.

Today Apple released the new firmware – Version 2.0.1 (5B108).

Officially Apple’s not saying much about what’s included with only “Bug fixes” listed. Unofficially I can confirm that things seem a lot snappier, with large lists like contacts not only appearing, but actually usable (scroll and selectable). This was previously one of the slowest operations, also being one of the most common, it was painful.

So far after the mammoth 2+ hours process of download, backup and install of the new firmware, I haven’t had any applications crash out. I’ll wait a few more days before claiming the problem is totally eliminated.

That said I’m very glad we’ve seen Apple release the update today, however Apple took far to long to fix these issues. Reports of problems began almost instantly after the people got hands on with firmware 2.0. Enthusiasts who got the phone / software update on launch day have had to struggle through these incredibly frustrating issues.

If this update does indeed bring stability into line with the stunning functionality of the device, then those holding off on buying an iPhone for this reason, can now pull out the plastic and buy one.. if you can find one that is.

    Update
After spending a good couple fo days with the new firmware I can confirm and recommend that users do upgrade to 2.0.1. I’ve had much improved stability, faster backups, speedier access and scrolling of contact lists, and best of all the battery life is dramatically improved, now lasting a day with constant use.
