Kia designer’s have done it again with the Stinger, a V6 twin-turbo RWD

Kia couldn’t wait for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to start, announcing the new Kia Stinger and it has been confirmed that it’ll arrive in Australia. The designers at Kia have once again created a car that strikes the balance of looking classy and elegant beyond its (expected) price tag, while being aggressive enough to keep enthusiast’s hearts racing faster than a can of Red Bull.

The Stinger is a rear-wheel drive GT fastback sports sedan that is expected be in Australian showrooms by the end of the third quarter of 2017.

The Stinger features a 3.3L V6 twin turbo, designed to provide power and efficiency and reflects current industry trends to move away from the V8s to smaller turbocharged V6s. While final specifications are still to be settled the Stinger is expected to produce 272kW at 6000rpm and an impressive 510Nm. It delivers the power through the rear wheels via an eight-speed transmission with an impressive (expected) 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds.

Chief Operating Officer at Kia Motors Australia, Damien Meredith said,

“This is a car you cannot help but be excited by. It has all the attributes to appeal to the Australian enthusiast _ exciting design, a high-tech performance engine and gearbox combination and rear-wheel drive.

The Stinger is the right car to take Kia, and the brand’s perception, to the next level in Australia. It is the type of car to add desire and excitement to Kia’s core values of style, reliability and value.”

Whatever Kia pays its designers, its not enough. They’ve managed to transform the brand into a respected and now established player in a very crowded Australian auto market. The Stinger is designed in Kia’s Frankfurt studio and is the handy work of Kia’s head of design and multi-award winner, Peter Schreyer.

The car has been developed and tested on the mega Nurburgring under the watchful eye of KMC’s performance and engineering guru Albert Biermann. Kia says the Stinger is an uncompromising rendition of the true gran turismo ethos: nimble and fast, luxurious and quiet with the perfect balance of ride and handling.

“I think for the Kia brand, the Stinger is like a special event,” Biermann said. “Because nobody expects such a car, not just the way it looks, but also the way it drives. It’s a whole different animal.”

Inside the car looks pretty luxurious, with leather wrapped dash and seats, plenty of functions on the steering wheel and an in-dash display which we hope runs Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (no official word yet).
The Australian version will get even more R&D by the KMAu ride and handling team that will refine the suspension and tuning to ensure Australian buyers are presented with a local tuning package which best suits Australia’s testing roads.

With great looks inside and out, the only thing we could hope for is a fully electric version of the Stinger. One can dream.
