The most popular VR headset on the planet, Oculus Rift is finally ready for prime time, in the first quarter of next year. With pre-orders going live later this year, the rest of the details are limited, very limited. In a blog post, we finally got an answer on a consumer release window from the Facebook-owned Oculus. What they didn’t give us is much else, nothing on price, nothing on detailed specs or software partners, so that’s all in the wait and see category.
The Oculus Rift builds on the presence, immersion, and comfort of the Crescent Bay prototype with an improved tracking system that supports both seated and standing experiences, as well as a highly refined industrial design, and updated ergonomics for a more natural fit.
The company has released a number of development versions, each increasing in resolution and reducing lag time, apparently they think they’re finally ready for you to experience it at home. The Development Kit 2 is still available for US$350.00 which offers 960 x 1080 pixels per eye. It’s likely this will remain on sale for some time, as developers increasingly understand the platform in the leadup to launch.
