OnePlus updates to OxygenOS built on Lollipop

OnePlus has changed their approach to software development. Gone is the partnership with the popular Cyanogen version of Android, instead we now get OxygenOS, a fresh take on the familiar experience. This new version 1.0.0 OS is built on top of Android 5.0.2 and is 705MB in size.

Oxygen is a clean, simple interface UI and builds on, rather than ruins the interface overhaul Google did in Lollipop. There’s some custom gestures, including gestures while the screen is off. Double-tap to wake, music controls, and shortcuts for the camera and flashlight to name a few.

The developers over at OnePlus weren’t happy with the stock lockscreen and now allow a wider range of lockscreen wallpaper customisations and the ability to switch between hardware and software navigation keys.

There’s also a brand new new quick settings feature, where tiles can be added, removed, and re-organized with the click of a button. This is demonstrated in the announcement video.

While the new OxygenOS is well done, OnePlus want your feedback to make sure it meets your needs. They’ve also released a Feedback app for you to provide direct feedback to the company. Why this app isn’t included in the OS, is a little puzzling.

The biggest problem with custom builds of Android is around updates after Google ships new releases of Android. With Android 5.1.1 around the corner, it’ll be interesting to watch how long it takes OnePlus to ship new releases.
