PS4 controller can be used on PC

President of Worldwide Studios for Sony, Shuhei Yoshida, has confirmed that the new DualShock 4 that comes with the PS4 can also be used for PC gaming. Yoshida says the PS4 controller will have ‘basic functions’ by default, from this we can assume that the DualShock 4 will support basic triggers, thumbstick and standard button support. More advanced features like the six-axis sensor, the touch pad and the share buttons will likely be unsupported.

While the use cases may be slim for a PS4 controller with basic function support, it is always great to get something, in this case additional functionality, for free from our gadgets. The announcement came via Twitter after Nacho Fdez (@Napo2k) asked Yoshida (@yosp) directly.

This move from Sony is in stark contrast with Microsoft’s Xbox 360 controller which was incompatible with PC and required the purchase of a separate PC version, despite appearing visually the same. We don’t yet know if the Xbox One controller will suffer from the same disconnect, but lets hope this announcement from Sony pushes the industry forward.
