Despite being announced at last year’s MIX conference, the Qantas has only just been released. It turns out the release was a quiet one with the Marketplace listing the official release date as 14/03/2012, over two weeks ago, yet the company only started posting social yesterday. Naturally the app lets you do all the core features like getting flight information, checking in, finding Qantas lounge locations, but by far the flagship feature is flight pinning.
The Windows Phone platform allows application developers to specify parts of their applications that can be pinned to the home screen as a tile. Unfortunately not many apps are taking advantage of this great feature. Qantas uses this functionality to deliver flight information to the user at a glance. In this instance, individual flights can be pinned, meaning you can watch the countdown to your flight time without ever launching the app.
As someone who travels across a number of Airlines, I wish this functionality was available from the awesome travel service TripIt, which is airline agnostic when providing travel information. If you’d like to brag about your worldly travels, the app also provides access to share flight info on social networks – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or Windows Live.
It’s worth noting that the app currently doesn’t support flights information on Qantas’ regional subsidiary Rex.
