SONOS Playbase is for those not wall-mounting

If you need audio solution for your living room and are renting, or just don’t fancy drilling holes in your wall, then the new SONOS Playbase may be for you. The company believes that up to 70% of TVs currently sit on furniture.

The Playbase comes in both black and white and the designers say its supposed to resemble a slab of granite. The internals had to be developed from the ground up to fit within the unique form factor. There’s actually 42,000 speaker holes in the grill that allows the sound out of the body.

Inisde are 10 amplified internal drivers–six mid-range, three tweeters, and one woofer that replace the limited output of your TV’s built-in speakers, with deeper, richer sounds that more accurately reflect the audible vision of movie creators.

Don’t forget you can control this like any other SONOS device, right from your smartphone. You can also stream from more than 30 popular music services and even group this with other speakers in your house, great for parties.

While delivering the SONOS wireless and streaming features fans love, the Playbase also acts as a stand, supporting up to 35kg of weight from your TV. In their placement guide, SONOS has a pretty funny statement on placing items too light on top of the Playbase.

Don’t place objects lighter than 5 lbs (2.3 kg) on top of your PLAYBASE. The sound may send them flying.

In terms of pricing, you’re up for $999.00 which is fairly standard when it comes to SONOS hardware, with the Sub and Playbar costing similar prices each. Of course you can add a pair of Play 1’s to get a full surround sound effect.
