Companies these days are producing devices that not only perform a single task, but cross the boundaries into the feature set of others. Take this new GPS from Mio, the c720t. It not only does the base function of a GPS, but also as many do can store photos, play MP3’s etc, but this goes even 1 step further and includes a digital camera with geotagging.
This got me thinking… I’m not going 2 buy a GPS to play MP3’s, that’s what I have a car stereo for, I’m not going 2 put digital photos on to watch back on that small screen (4.3′ is still small compared to my laptop or tv), and I’m sure as hell not going 2 take photos with the thing. Nor am I going to buy a mobile phone to replace my digital camera, video camera… u can see a trend emerging..
If your a business take note, u need to decide.. Do one thing, and do it spectacularly and blow the competition out of the water, don’t throw in crappy second-rate features that no-one will actually use.
The other option is to make the ultimate All-in-one device. This would have 2 excel in all areas, using the example above, it would have to be the best GPS, Digital Camera, MP3 player and not just do ok, but be great in all categories.. the killer device if u will. No doubt you could charge a premium for this real-world beneficial device. The consumer does not want to have to carry multiple devices that really should by now all be included in one.
I’m sure that natural evolution could put us somewhat closer to a All-in-one device in 3-5 years, but we shouldn’t need to wait that long, we need it now.
Here’s the features I’d like in an All-in-one device…
Phone
Digital Camera
Video Camera
GPS
Webcam
MP3 Player
And if all that can’t be delivered in a small device, then make them seperate and don’t try and scam consumers with a half-assed attempt.
