Tesla adds first Superchargers in Melbourne, opens in June

When Tesla launched in Australia at the end of 2014, Sydney got its first Supercharger. Now almost 6 months on, Melbourne now has its first. The first Victorian Service Center for Tesla will open at the end of next week, located at 650 Church Street, Building 5, Richmond VIC 3121. At the front of the venue stand 4 proud rechargers. These chargers aren’t yet operational, but will be in just a few weeks.

If you happen to own a Tesla, you can recharge for free using any of the company’s growing supercharger network. In the car park of the Doncaster Westfield, Tesla has priority parking for owners which compliments their first Victorian sales site. These chargers are fast chargers (up to 32A), but no superchargers. Richmond will be the first and given it’s proximity to the city center, it’s a nice location.

Only with the full power of a supercharger do you get multiple Model S chargers working in parallel to deliver up to 120 kW of direct current (DC) power directly to the battery. As the battery nears full charge, the car’s onboard computer gradually reduces the current to the optimum level for topping off cells.

With just 30 minutes of charging, the Tesla Supercharger will add 270km of range. With 40 Minutes, the 85kW battery will be 80% full, after just 75 minutes, it’ll be full at 100%, something that’d take you overnight at home.

The total current sites internationally is 425 Supercharger stations with 2,338 Superchargers with Australia set to add considerably to that by the end of 2016. An ambitious plan that will allow owners to travel the length of the east coast without paying to fuel their vehicle.
