Tesla Motors just announced a cheaper Tesla. Today they are introducing the Model S 70D, an all-electric, all-wheel drive car with a 0-100km/h time of just 5.2 seconds. and a 400 kilometer range at 105km per hour. This new cheapest Model S starts at just US$75,000 which is a significant drop from existing models.
As the cost of batteries continues to fall, Telsa are on a trajectory for lower-priced vehicles, but there are some non-essential features like auto-pilot that are options for the 70D. Tesla says if you factor in the cost advantages over an internal combustion engine vehicle, including fuel savings and incentives, the actual cost of owning Model S 70D comes to about US$55k over 5 years (the average length of new car ownership). Keen in mind Australia doesn’t have the same EV tax concessions of some US states, so the local price is likely to be a fair bit higher, but still a good saving on the P85.
In addition to having independently operational front and rear motors, the 70D includes Supercharging to enable free long-distance travel, Autopilot hardware, navigation, blind spot detection and many other features. As with every Model S, the 70D will receive free over-the-air updates that add functionality and improve the driving experience for years to come.
The Model S 70D goes on sale today and deliveries start in May this year. You can also get any Model S in three new colors: Ocean Blue, Obsidian Black, and Warm Silver.
