Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk has just made his latest big announcement. The outdoor event began with a focus on the overall mission of Tesla, which is of course to save the planet.

Musk announced the Powerwall 2 which will deliver around twice as much storage as the first Powerwall. It’s also squared off and flat instead of the bulging backpack style of the first version.

One 14 kWh Powerwall 2 battery A$8,000, the installation and supporting hardware starts at $1,450, so you’ll be up for around A$9,450. The time required to pay off that investment will vary greatly between households and certainly add up for larger families sooner. Installations begin February 2017.

If you have crazy power requirements, or need to live off the grid, you can connect up to 9 Powerwalls together.

The Usable Capacity 13.5 kWh, Power is 7kW peak / 5kW continuous, is in terms of size is 1150mm L x 755mm W x 155mm D. With a larger capacity, the Powerwall 2 is also heavier at 110 kg, so if you plan on mounting it on a wall, make sure you’ve got a robust solution sorted.
