Windows 10 Build 10159 released just 1 day after 10158

Another day, another Windows 10 build, literally. After teasing ‘a surprise’ earlier in the day, Windows Insider chief Gabe Aul has announced a brand new build of Windows 10 will roll out to the fast ring today. It was only yesterday that the last build 10158 was released, but the new build has been tested internally for some time and Microsoft has decided the more than 300 new fixes should be public.

Naturally this raises the question, why release two builds so fast, back to back, instead of the usual weeks between releases? Aul explains that Microsoft validate builds in internal rings by engineers Microsoft. If they pass all of criteria, they are made available to Windows Insiders.

Builds are first released to Insiders that have selected the Fast ring, then to those who’ve opted to wait a little and are in Slow rings, once a build is confirmed as stable.

We’d been using 10158 for almost a week and knew it was going to be a strong build, and the data backed that up so we released it yesterday. Hot on its heels though was build 10159, which in addition to more fixes (over 300 of them!), took in one very interesting change. We didn’t want to wait with 10158 so we went ahead and released that build while we were still evaluating 10159. As it turns out though, 10159 is also a great build and passes our criteria for the Windows Insider Fast ring.

Build 10159 will be published later this afternoon (US time) and should be available everywhere by end of day. If you found yourself mid-way through updating to 10158 when 10159 is published, you may get an error 0x80246017. If that happens, just reboot your PC, go back to Settings and check again and you should see 10159 offered to you.

Build 10158 was a massive step forward in terms of stability, as the leaked build 10147 suffered from a crashing mail app, Edge browser and many, many more problems. In 10158, Cortana became much more usable and the speed at which your voice is detected and accuracy in which it’s interpreted is seriously impressive. Below is a couple of examples of Cortana in Window 10.
