Terry Myerson, Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of Operating Systems just announced that universal apps will run on the Xbox One with Windows 10.

Currently developing universal apps in Visual Studio allows the creation of 2 app packages, one for the Windows Store and one for Windows Phone. With Windows 10, Microsoft are turning on what many developers have dreamed of, getting access to the Xbox.

Until now, publishing apps to the Xbox required a partnership with Microsoft and a lengthy approval process.

Microsoft showed off the new Xbox app on Windows 10, nothing new for those of us who’ve been running the leaked build 9901. What is new is the announcement that this will surface PC gaming activity from friends, as well as those gamers on Xbox.

Microsoft showed off the ability to capture gameplay and have that recorded video show up in the Game DVR section. The game recorded doesn’t have to know anything about the new OS to work. These recorded video can then be shared out to social networks to share with your friends and networks.

The graphics subsystem of Windows 10 is DirectX12 and as you’d expect offers far better performance and power efficiencies. We’ll only really know the difference this makes once we get hands on.
