I can’t think of the last time I was in a supermarket and needed a 3D Printer, but if you have, there’s good news. ALDI Supermarkets will sell the 3D Printer as a ALDI Special Buy from the 17th Februrary, as well as the filament required to print. Over the last few years we’ve seen a dramatic reduction in the prices of 3D Printers, which has opened the market to general consumers.

The 3D printer on offer at ALDI is made by Cocoon Create which for A$499.00 is a great starting price. It wasn’t long ago we broke through the $1,000 price point, so to see that cut in half so quickly is a great deal for consumers. The features of the 3D printer are below and depending on your requirements, may be perfect for your intended job.

    • Speed: 10-70mm/second (adjustable)
    • Connection via USB or SD card
    • Printer size: 400 x 410 x 400mm
    • Max. temperature: 260°C
    • Includes CURA software
    • Supported filaments PLA/ABS/PVA/HIPS
    • Build volume 200 x 200 x 180mm

It is important to remember that like many traditional printers, its the disposables that can add up. In this instance the 3D printer takes PLA Filament and ALDI is also selling it in 1kg spools for A34.99 each (available in green, blue, grey and black . This printer would be a great option if your kids are interested in engineering and design and remember, even applications like Photoshop now supports 3D printing. There’s also plenty of low cost or free apps to design new 3D models or alternatively you can head to a 3D marketplace to download or buy the work of others.

Check out the printer in action.

Its fantastic to see the availability of 3D printers come to something as convenient as your local supermarket and don’t be surprised if some other no-technical retailers follow suit.
