moto tag Tracker Takes on Apple, Samsung and Tile in Australia

Motorola has made a strategic move into the competitive smart tracking device market with the launch of its moto tag in Australia, marking a significant expansion of its product ecosystem beyond smartphones.

The new tracking device, which leverages Google’s Find My Device network, positions Motorola as a strong contender in a market dominated by Apple’s AirTag, Samsung’s Galaxy SmartTag 2, and Tile’s range of trackers.

Available exclusively through Harvey Norman, the moto tag comes in two colours – Starlight Blue and Jade Green – and is priced at $55 for a single unit, with a four-pack option available at $179.

This pricing is above a 4 pack of Tile or Samsung SmartTag 2, however moto tag has the unique ability to work with any Android v 9.0 or newer phone whereas you need a Samsung phone to use a SmartTag 2 and the Tile tracking network is much smaller than the Google Find My Device network.

Kurt Bonnici, Head of Motorola Greater Asia Pacific, emphasizes the strategic importance of this launch:

“This has been a pivotal year for Motorola, we have established ourselves as a leader in market. The expansion of Motorola’s ecosystem and the release of moto tag demonstrates our commitment to bringing value through our entire portfolio by innovating to solve customer pain points.”

At the heart of the moto tag’s functionality is its integration with Google’s Find My Device network, which encompasses over a billion Android devices worldwide.

This extensive network enables users to locate their tagged items virtually anywhere in the world, provided they’re within 100 meters of any Android device running Android 9.0 or later which is Opted In to be part of the Google Find My Device tracking network.

The system utilizes Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology for precise tracking, with future support planned for Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to enable even more accurate location finding.

Privacy and security features are central to the moto tag’s design. The device incorporates end-to-end encryption on Google’s trusted network, ensuring all tracking data remains private.

To prevent misuse, both Android and iOS devices can detect if an unknown moto tag is traveling with them and locate it by triggering a sound alert.

Users can also perform manual scans to search for nearby trackers, providing an additional layer of security against unwanted tracking.

The moto tag’s practical design includes several thoughtful features. A dedicated multifunctional button allows users to locate their phone by triggering a ring alert, even when the phone is in silent mode.

The device’s compatibility with popular third-party accessories makes it easy to attach to various items, from keys and wallets to backpacks and luggage. Users can also share tracking access with trusted family and friends through the Find My Device app, enabling collaborative item location when needed.
