The Office of Naval Research (ONR) today announced that it is aiming to “field and test a solid-state laser prototype” in early 2014 aboard the USS Ponce.

Along with this, the US Navy also released a video of a prototype destroying a small drone. No, this isn’t like Star Wars sadly so there isn’t any bright green or red laser bullets or no awesome laser sounds – it’s clear and silent, but still freaking awesome!

Danger Room’s Spencer Ackermon said that the use of this weapon is “a major show in confidence” of the technology at hand. The navy is hoping to use this technology as an alternative to “countering certain surface, air, and ballistic missile targets.”

This doesn’t mean a Death Star is on the cards though, Barack Obama has already dismissed that one.
