The second big update to Windows Phone has begun rolling out to devices across the world. While there’s no new handsets yet, as promised, every existing WP7 will receive the update. Developers have been running, and testing, the update for some months now.
Developers were warned at length, that they would need to be responsible for backing up their device. There was no guarantee that any upgrade path would exist from the development build to the full retail build of Mango. Well good news developers, Microsoft have done the hard yards to make this upgrade an easy one. The Windows Phone 7.5 update will simply show up as a toast notification, connect your device to the Zune software and the update will commence.
When you look down the list of ‘Where is my update’ you can see that almost every carrier around the world is today delivering the update ! The big three in Australia, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone are all ‘delivering update’.
It’s fantastic to see that Microsoft learnt from the disaster that was NoDo. There is plenty to like about Mango, so if you have a Windows Phone, you should definitely see if the update has rolled to your corner of the world. Unfortunately there is no way to filter Marketplace applications to show WP7.5 apps differently to WP7 apps.
