Today the Telstra TV became infinitely more useful with the addition of the Foxtel Play app. For those Foxtel subscribers living in the fututre with no concept of a satellite dish on the roof, the play app offers ip-based access to Foxtel content.
Typically the Foxtel Play experience has been a mobile one, however there was an app for Xbox 360 (since discontinued) as well as the Xbox One. Some people also connected their laptops to the TV to get it to the big screen, but the problem with both of those solutions is rhe quality.
At SD, Foxtel Play works well on smaller displays, but blow it up to 40″ and beyond and your in a world of hurt.
Thankfully the big news today is that HD Foxtel Play has arrived for those with a Telstra TV.
The Foxtel Play app is free on the hockey-puck sized device which is built on Rocku from the US.
The Telstra TV had its merits, but this is the killer app that lets you ditch the Satellite, the iQ3 STB and get your favourite live channels and on demand content straight from the internet.
Foxtel are still investigating if the HD is 720p or 1080p, but after watching a bit of it, my guess is 720 that actually looks pretty great even at 52″. for sports fans, we now head into 2017 with a great solution for warching Supercars and Formula 1 on the biggest screen in your house.
Update
We’ve heard back and can now confirm the streaming quality of Foxtel Play on Telstra TV is currently 720p. After watching for a while longer, I’m actually really surprised how good the quality is, given there’s only 1280×720 pixels, must be running a high bitrate.
