Overnight LG announced their new flagship phone the G2. This is a monster at 5.2″, it sounds weird to say, but that size is now completely acceptable thanks to Samsung popularising large phones. The G2 is impressive on the spec sheet as you’ll see below.
One of the more unique things about the G2 is the rear control slider. LG say this is a more natural position for the control of things like volume as that’s where your fingers normally rest. I’m not sure it was the biggest issue that needed solving on phones, but props to them for something different. I just hope you don’t smudge up the camera lens when reaching for it.
In terms of software, it’s disappointing to see it miss out on Android 4.3 from the factory, but an update won’t be too far away. While the geeks love stock Android, LG are clearly relying on their customisations to win some marketshare from the Samsung giant.
Apparently LG believe we’ve all been waiting to ‘KnockOn’, that’s knocking your screen like you do a door, to wake it up. Sorry LG, but I haven’t been waiting for that at all. Once awake, I do like the concept of a Guest Mode before handing your device to someone. The problem with that is that what your friend wanted the device for was probably a connected app that wouldn’t be available in Private Mode.
It’s great to see Optical Image Stabilisation coming to the G2, as we’ve seen Nokia have really pioneered the smart phone use of this technology. We knew that wouldn’t be an exclusive for long. Those clear photos will undoubtedly look gorgeous on that full HD display. With a screen of that size and resolution, you’ll need plenty of battery and thankfully LG have managed to shove a 3,000 mAh battery inside the thin form factor.
