Microsoft WSUS goes awry: installs Windows Desktop Search automatically

Amongst others the Register is reporting there are some very unhappy SysAdmins today. Those running WSUS (Windows Server Update Services) which is supposed to allow admins to have ultimate control over the rollouts of updates, something went quite wrong today. Windows Desktop Services 3.01 installed itself on corporate machines without being approved.

This resulted in machines experiencing reduced performance as the search indexer from Windows Desktop Search passed over their HDD’s.

Reports online are growing rapidly of this problem, Microsoft are getting a lot of bad press from what really is pretty severe mistake. Imagine this happening with a large update, it could potentially blow out download limits / charges, costing business thousands.
