As of the 1st March, you will no longer get support and updates for Netscape, as owners, AOL have decided to cease development.
You can see the official announcement here.
This extract sums up the reason why Netscape are shutting up shop – “While internal groups within AOL have invested a great deal of time and energy in attempting to revive Netscape Navigator, these efforts have not been successful in gaining market share from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer.”
Sad to see such a long time competitor go by the way side, but there is still very healthy competition in the browser market. Firefox being second in the game, followed by Safari, then Opera. A new Social Web browser called Flock, that has in-built integration for your social sites (Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter), could see them rapidly gain market share.
Despite the loss of Netscape, the browser market is still very much alive my friends.
