Western Digital launches massive 6TB 2.5″ portable HDD

Our lives are now full of digital content, a combination of content we both consume and create. Storing this content is often a challenge, with internal laptop drives, often not large enough to cater to our increasing thirst to store data, certainly not at an affordable price.

Western Digital has created a portable hard drive that connects via USB and can help you store as much as 6TB on a single drive. Portable hard drives were typically pitched at those with mobile needs like photographers and were often used for transient data, like capturing a wedding, then getting the photos back to work or home and transferring the content off to the ‘real’ storage.

With this much capacity, you’ll feel free to store lots of your data, across a variety of use cases and given the size, it’ll likely last you a very long time before you need to clear it off. I think about my own creation of data, with a multi-cam GoPro shoot, drone footage and footage shot on my mobile phone, all in 4K, even then we’re talking maybe 100 Gigabytes, not Terabytes.

Western Digital’s portable HDD expansion across its WD, WD_BLACK and SanDisk Professional product lineups, helps them boast a new world highest storage capacity in a 2.5” portable HDD.

The WD My Passport portable HDD lineWD_BLACK P10 Game Drive and SanDisk Professional G-DRIVE ArmorATD will all now be available in 6TB capacities.

“Expanding our portfolio with the world’s first 2.5” 6TB portable hard drive is an incredible technological achievement, and it enables us to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, Offering up to 6TB in such a small form factor and accessible price point gives everyone—from students, gamers, professional videographers, and more—greater flexibility to create and keep even more of their essential content in one portable drive.”

Nitin Kachhwaha, Director of Product Management at Western Digital.

The new, record-breaking 6TB capacity point is now available across Western Digital’s premier brands, offering a more robust, purpose-built solution for consumers, gamers and pros:
