Last month Disney closed LucasArts, the game studio that was behind most Star Wars games and there was speculation with what’s going to happen next with those games – well, we now know that EA studios DICE (they make Battlefield) and Visceral (these guys make Dead Space) will both make new games for the franchise, and BioWare (Star Wars: The Old Republic) will “continue” to keep working on Star Wars games.

Disney will still be making some games for the franchise.. mobile games that is, while EA will handle all games for the “core gaming audience”.

“Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” EA Labels president Frank Gibeau said in a statement. “Three of our top studios will fulfil that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Warsfans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay.”

Some pretty good studios are on board to create these new games, so it seems like the franchise is in good hands – as long as EA doesn’t have always-on DRM, anyway.
