DJI is a leader in media creation and their latest products RS4 series of products offer a lightweight commercial-level stabiliser for DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. The products now feature a quick release and the ability to mount your camera in either horizontal or vertical shooting.
While many new sports action cameras (and mobile phones) are adding image stablisation, our larger cameras are well behind on that front and for this, DJI solves that with hardware through the RS4.
The latest generation offers enhanced efficiency and stabilisation performance, empowering solo cinematographers to capture grand scenes effortlessly.
The DJI RS 4 Pro flagship stabiliser seamlessly integrates with the DJI PRO ecosystem, offering a solution that combines stabilisation, transmission, monitoring, focusing, and control, thereby expanding creativity.
While there’s a lot of iteration on the RS3, the DJI Focus Pro offers an innovative new feature, an industry-first independent Automated Manual Focus (AMF) lens control system. This complements the zoom control and allows creators to achieve shots that are established, framed correctly and in focus, something typically that requires multiple people to achieve.
With the latest RS 4 and RS 4 Pro stabilisers, DJI has taken feedback from customers to deliver the RS4.
I had a chance to get hands-on with the RS4, which now supports 3kg payloads and an 8.5mm tilt axis, accommodating for many mainstream camera and lens combinations. This uses an aluminium alloy material that feels robust but those looking to take things to the next level should look at the RS4 Pro.
The DJI RS4 Pro is the new flagship and uses a carbon fibre chassis that supports up to 4.5kg in payload.
Both feature the new battery which offers more than 29 hours of runtime, more than enough to use it and not think about it. If you want to check the remaining power, there’s a convenient button on the battery grip with 4 LEDs to indicate 25% segments.
Your interface to control the RS4 products is a 1.8″ OLED Full-Color Touchscreen a control thumbstick and at the front of the grip is a scroll wheel that controls the zoom (or focus).
One of the main features of the RS series of stablisers is the auto-lock feature. This means when you’re done shooting and need to throw it in the car, there’s no complicated process, just power it down, the gimbal rotates all 3 axis’ to the lock position to easily lay it down and know your camera gear is secure. When you’re ready for the next scene, just power it on and the camera returns to the established position, ready to go.
I had the chance to use the RS4 Combo which comes with the carrying case which is great and the briefcase handle. This allows for two points of contact, which is always important to balance the weight and allow your body to perform some of the stablisation. Even when running the visuals remained amazingly smooth.
What’s impressive is the number of mounting configurations you can have with the RS4, great for the shots from above, or at ground level and the most intense setups will even see these bolted to the back of cars for vehicle promotions or event high-end YouTube videos.
