DEAL: Tesla Gen 3 Wall Charger for A$693 at JETCharge

If you’re looking for a fast charger at home for your electric vehicle, you can spend thousands on it, but you really don’t need to. Tesla’s Gen 3 Wall Charger is widely regarded as one of the best-looking, feature-rich and cheapest chargers to install at home or at your business.

What will normally cost you A$750 directly from Tesla, is currently on sale for A$693 ($57 off) at Charging service Jet Charge.

ET Charge was created in 2013 to supply and install Electric Vehicle Chargers to support and accelerate the growth of EV sales in Australia. From humble beginnings in Victoria, JET Charge has grown to be Australia’s market leader with a growing presence in New Zealand. With a team of nearly 100 people currently (and growing fast!), they offer the full vertical in EV Charging including:

    • EV Charging cords and accessory sales
    • Home charger supply and installation
    • Small medium and large commercial installation of chargers
    • Strategy consulting for apartments, shopping centres and car parks
    • Maintenance and warranty support
    • Software and hardware development
    • Private EV charging infrastructure as a service

If you’re buying a Tesla, it’s important to remember that they recently had a change in policy which means they no longer include a charger with the vehicle. You will need a charger, so this means you have a choice to make, do you buy a travel charger or a faster wall charger? As a comparison, the Mobile Connector costs A$550.

What is the Gen 3 Wall Charger?

The Gen 3 Wall Charger is an AC charger, as such will suit any vehicles that have a CCS2 fast charging port and use the top half of the connector. The charging connector docks conveniently into the side of the charger and the cable loops over the charger for storage while not in use.

The charger helps reduce the time it takes to recharge your electric vehicle, as compared to a standard wall outlet.

    Wall Connector Features

    Speed

Wall Connector is compatible with Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y and is capable of providing up to 75 km of range per hour of charge, with up to 11kW output, depending on model.

    Convenience

Wall Connector can adapt to most home electrical systems, with customizable power levels on a range of circuit breakers. This versatility allows installation in most homes, apartments, condos and workplaces. The lightweight 7.3 meter cable allows the Mobile Connector to be left in the car.

    Connectivity

Connecting the Wall Connector to a local Wi-Fi network enables it to receive over-the-air firmware updates, remote diagnostics access and usage data tracking capability. Firmware updates will be automatically sent to the Wall Connector to improve the user experience and introduce new features.

    Power Sharing

Power sharing is ideal for households that need to charge more than one Tesla at the same time, but may not have enough power for multiple electrical circuits. This functionality allows up to six Wall Connectors to share power from one circuit while still allowing your vehicles to receive a sufficient charge.

    Access Control

Charging Access Control gives you full control over which cars are allowed to charge with your Wall Connector. You can restrict charging access directly through the commissioning wizard without having to resort to a physical locking device.

    Indoor/Outdoor Compatible

Wall Connector’s lightweight design allows for versatile, indoor or outdoor mounting. Tesla offers a Wall Connector Pedastal for those installations where mounting it to a wall isn’t an option. This does cost a premium A$430.

    How fast can it charge?

It is important to understand that not all EVs are created equal. The internal workings of the charging and battery management systems vary a lot between vehicles and that impacts how fast EVs can charge on AC and DC power sources.

Tesla provides a breakdown of charging speeds for their own vehicles, shown in the table below. As we can see, the charger supports both single and 3 phase implementations.

    Wall Connector Technical detailsCharge Speed
    Range added per hour* (km/h)
    Circuit breaker
    (Phase + Amps)
    Output Power
    (kW)

    Single phase 32A7.4 kW38503450
    Single phase 16A3.5 kW19251725
    Single phase 10A2.3 kW13151115

The cost of the charger is the first part of the cost, the second part is installation. Tesla advises that a straightforward installation can range from A$750 – A$1,500 and based on quotes I’ve had for a Gen 2 installation, this is accurate.

If you’re on the lower end of this, you could have a high-powered EV charger installed at home for as little as A$1,500. When you think about the ongoing fuel savings available with an EV, this is a small cost in the overall scheme of things and a feature that can be included on the brochure should you ever sell the property.

You will need a licenced electrician to install and you should guide them to the installation page if they are not familiar with the process.

The third-generation Tesla Wall Connector features WiFi connectivity to stay up-to-date with over-the-air firmware updates and remote diagnostics. It has also been rumoured that those who install a Gen 3 charger could potentially charge customers who charge from their connector. At least for now, this feature is not enabled in Australia.

Jet Charge has a limit of 3 per customer and if you’re keen, you can buy the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Charger at JetCharge here.

    1. In this wall charger are two settings: one the mentioned choice of the kwh setting. The second one has two choices: standard setting is set to nr1, charging only Tesla, switch this to set nr2, and you can charge all EV.
