What we have here is a the Logitech Powershell, a new controller for the iPhone that transforms your iPhone 5s, iPhone 5, or iPod touch (5th generation) into a PSP-like portable gaming device. While most of you are already running it, its worth pointing out that this requires you to be running iOS 7.
The analog controls allow the full display to be used for the entertainment, and provide a D-pad on the left, with shoulder triggers up top and and Xbox-style buttons on the right. This adapter adds the hardware controls that Steve Jobs never would. With recent entrants into the handheld market like the Nvidia shield, it’s great timing for the release, especially with Christmas just around the corner.
Logitech say the controller’s comfortable shape means you can play for longer periods than using touch. The portable controller maintains a profile that fits easily in your pocket or small bag – putting intensive, complex games within your reach wherever you are.
“We designed this controller to deliver a true console-gaming experience on an iOS 7 mobile device,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, general manager of the Logitech gaming business. “With gaming so pervasive on the mobile platform – our research shows that 87% of iPhone and iPod touch users play games on their device – it’s time to revolutionize the experience.”
With your iPhone or iPod touch in the controller, you’ll maintain full access to power on/off, volume, camera, speakers, headphone jack and charging. With the screen running for the duration of your gaming session, you’ll need more power and the controller comes with a 1500 mAh battery. To make things simply, you can recharge both batteries without removing the phone from the controller – smart.
Now you’re sold on the idea, you’re wondering about the compatibility. The game controller framework for iOS has a long and rapidly growing list of popular games, including Bastion, Fast & Furious 6: The Game, MetalStorm Aces, Galaxy On Fire 2™ HD and Nitro™ among others available from the App Store.
