BYD owner suffers vandalism while using kerbside EV charger in Newcastle

A BYD owner has had their charging cable damaged overnight, as they charged their Atto 3 Electric Vehicle.

The charging location was on kerbside charging available at the Victoria Theatre, located at 8/10 Perkins St, Newcastle NSW 2300, Australia (Plugshare link).

The site features overnight charging for up to 4 vehicles and delivers AC charging at 7kw from light pole mounted chargers.

These chargers were installed by JetCharge and are on the Chargefox network.

This kerbside charging is a great answer for those who do not have access to charging options at home and avoids the problematic challenges of running cables across sidewalks.

These kerbside chargers require you to bring your own (BYO) your own Type-2 to Type 2 EV charging cable like this one from EVSE. These are not cheap costing hundreds of dollars, depending on the length of cable.

It’s really disappointing to see charging infrastructure damaged, regardless of who has to fit the bill to replace it.

Given the vehicle wasn’t damaged, but the charging cable was, this seems to be a pretty clear case of an anti-EV offender lashing out.

Let’s hope people or businesses around the area last night have security footage and we can see this vandalism dealt with appropriately.

There’s a Thread on this in the BED EV Owners Australia group on FB (link).
